These cover both tried-and-true areas (like active listening) as well as 21st-century ones (like email etiquette and when to use cloud-based messaging apps).Active listening in the workplaceLets start with old-fashioned conversation. One of the great misunderstood conversational tactics is active listening in the workplace. Contrary to popular belief, active listening is elend merely the act of passively not speaking while someone else is speaking, but it is listening so carefully that you can jump in when necessary to help the other person complete a thought or move the conversation forward. Practice active listening, and you will have a greater impact in your daily interactions. She says in urgent situations you should pick up the phone or walk to the other persons work station. Dont fall into the trap of compulsive checking.The power of face timeAt the risk of stating the obvious, there is still no substitute for face-to-face conversation. The reason I call attention to one-on-one dialog is because in todays always-on virtual communication buffet, we have 1,000 different ways NOT to talk to somebody fa ce-to-face. Skype and videoconferencing tools are your best friends when traditional physical meetings are impractical.Skeptical of whether meeting face-to-face still matters? When a company recognizes cultural fit as a top priority and regulates accordingly, you want to make sure you fit that culture before you start and determine behavioral expectations for what people at Company X do or dont do.Then, once youre integrated into the organization, raise concerns about any violations of company culture you see. Ask questions about values that need clarification as applied to daily work life. You can avoid potential damage to your reputation as a good corporate citizen by actively addressing any questions about your relative influence on intra-office harmony. Thats why the Internet, through social media networks like LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter, would seem to be the best way to network them for recruiting. One major study contradicts that thinking on a global basis. Turns out Millennials, those folks born between 1982 and the early 2000s (the latter firmly not in the job market currently), are practically old fashion when it comes to their professional lives. Along with members of Generation X (born 1965 to 1981), the overwhelming choice is face-to-face meetings as the top choice of workplace communication.Based on survey data from mora than 40,000 people worldwide in 22 different countries, researchers at the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California Marshall School of geschftlicher umgang and London Business School, in conjunction with PricewaterhouseCoopers, outlined the communication preferences across the generations.According to information from the USC Marshall School, more than 80 percent of Generation X and Millennials said, Communicating through face-to-face meetings is critically important to maintaining relationships at work the highest rating of all, and greater than phone, email, instant messaging, texting, social network sites and video chat.The study also offers up what is considered another surprising result career counseling, planning and pay negotiations are also best handled in person rather than through electronic media. It said, Even more striking are the results for communications related to performance evaluations, career planning, and compensation. When asked to rank how they would prefer to communicate with their immediate supervisor about their performance evaluation, both generatio ns overwhelmingly choose face-to-face meetings (93 percent and 92 percent). Ninety-six percent of Millennials, and 95 percent of Generation Xers demonstrated a preference for face-to-face meetings with supervisors regarding career plans and progress 82 percent of both Millennials and Gen Xers preferred in person conversations when discussing compensation.Its also a face-to-face conversation Millennials would prefer to have with women. A Pew Research Center survey finds, Members of the Millennial generationadults ages 18 to 32are significantly less likely to prefer working with male coworkers than other generations. Overall, about one-in-nine (11%) of young adults say they want to work mostly with men compared with 19% of Gen Xers, 16% of Baby Boomers and 21% of the Silent generation (born 1928 to 1945).Adding gender to the analysis reveals other notable generational differences. Millennial men are significantly more likely than older men and Millennial women to say they prefer to wo rk mostly with women. Overall 11 percent of these young men say they favor working with women compared with 5 percent of all non-Millennial men and 6 percent of Millennial women.Maybe the Millennials want to emulate their professional elders because, as a group, they tend to respect Baby Boomers and the like. According to a Pew Research Center study, They respect their elders. A majority say that the older generation is superior to the younger generation when it comes to moral values and work ethic.Yet, the same study finds that Millennials say the defining characteristic of their generation is their technology use. Airline pilots, as well as cargo, corporate and charter pilots, can all face fatigue while on the job. While pilot fatigue can be common and overlooked, it poses a very troubling threat to aviation safety and should be taken seriously. There is a long history of debates between regulatory agencies, airline pilots and unions, and aircraft operators over pilot fatigue issues. Today, the issue is still being argued as the industry tries to find a common solution to decrease the risks associated with fatigue. The Problem With Pilot Fatigue Pilot fatigue has been a real problem since the beginning of air travel. Charles Lindbergh fought to stay awake on his record-breaking 33.5-hourtransatlantic flight from New York to Paris on the Spirit of St. Louis. Long-haul pilots have reported falling asleep at the controls. Cargo pilots that fly at night face fatigue from chal lenging the bodys natural internal clock. The Lindbergh flight provides a great example for the real issue today fatigue is an acceptable risk and one that isnt given enough credit. Lindbergh flew from New York to Paris without falling asleep. Similarly, pilots, today get away with flying tired all the time. If you ask an average pilot how much sleep he got the night before a flight, its probably on par with the average American, which is about six and a half hours. It might be an acceptable amount of sleep if you have a desk job. But the additional stressors of a pilots 10-hour workday, long commutes, lengthy flights, terrible airport diets, long layovers in airport lounges, and potential jet-lag increase operational risks for pilots. One more thing pilots, like everyone else,face unique family situations, financial stressand other life stressoutside of work. In general, your average pilot might be physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted when he takes the controls. But time after time, the plane takes off and lands without incident, making fatigue a somewhat socially acceptable risk in the aviation world. Causes Obviously, fatigue is caused by lack of sleep. But its not always that simple. It can manifest acutely, such as after a runner completes a marathon, or over time, which we may know as burnout. Here are some specific causes of fatigue Lack of quality sleepSleep disturbancesInterruption of circadian rhythmMental or emotional stress (such as family problems, anxiety, or check ride stress)Physical exertion, such as heavy exercisePoor health, including dehydration or poor diet Specifically, fatigue in pilots can be caused, or amplified by, the following Commuting some pilots start their day 2-3 hours earlier than others to commute to work. Some have to drive a long distance to the airport more often, though, a pilots commute is because he doesnt live near his home base at all, and he must fly in from a different airport, adding hours to the beg inning of his day.Layovers at airports sometimes pilots will have a 12-hour layover at an airport, where they are meant to rest. Instead, some choose not to sleep, or otherwise cant get to sleep. They watch TV, check email, or catch up with old friends and might get a few hours of sleep before their next flight departs. jetlag More apparent with long-haul pilots,jet-lag can be a big problem when it comes to pilot fatigue. Most operators give ample time for pilots to adjust to jet lag, but the body does go through stress when its circadian rhythm is interrupted, making it hard for pilots to sleep when they need to, and difficult for them to stay awake later when they need to.Night flying Cargo pilots, especially, deal with fatigue when flying lengthy routes at night due to the imbalance of the bodys natural circadian rhythm. This will be especially true for those pilots that have varying schedules or alternate day and night shifts. Monotonous tasks Pilots that fly the same aircraft o n the same routes into the same airports daily are prone to boredom fatigue. While the FAA and aviation operators can help mitigate the risks of pilot fatigue through education, changes to flight hour limit ations and other fatigue management programs, the ultimate responsibility of fatigue management lie with pilots themselves.
