Why its better to be human than to be right

Why its better to be human than to be rightWhy its better to be human than to be rightSometimes its better to be kind than to be right. We do not need an intelligent mind that speaks, but a patient heart that listens. - Gautama BuddhaOur mind loves being right.A student went to his meditation teacher and said, My meditation is horrible I feel distracted I cant focus, Im constantly falling asleep. Its just horribleIt will pass, the teacher said.A week later, the student came back to his teacher. My meditation is wonderful I feel so aware, so focused, so peacefulIt will pass, the teacher replied. We get stuck in the desire to be right. And expect things to be perfect. However, things change over time. Thats the teaching of this zen story. How does it feel to be wrong? It doesnt. The realization that we are wrong is what actually hurts.Being right is overrated, especially when the price you pay for it, is being unkind, impatient and insensitive - you forget to be human. The trouble with r ight or wrongWe look into our hearts and see objectivity we look into our minds and see rationality we look into our beliefs and see reality. - Kathryn SchulzBeing right puts us in scrutinizing mode we are looking for evidence to prove other people wrong rather than accepting lifes imperfections. We oversimplify reality. But not everything can be divided into right or wrong. We forget we are subjects. We see reality through a subjective lens. No matter how smart or logic you are, your mind plays a role in filtering your experience. We fear being wrong. We believe if we are wrong theres something wrong with us. We become the mistake. We think wrong is a destination, not a journey. Things are fluid. Remember what happened to the meditation student his practice fluctuated from one extreme to the other. We pay a very high price. The mandate to be always rights adds immense stress. Your brain is under constant pressure either justifying your thoughts or hiding your flaws. We stop listening to others. The belief of being always right assumes that everyone else is wrong. When you own the truth, you stop trying to understand other peoples points of view.Resistance to being wrong paralyzes your understanding.Kathryn Schultz, the author of Being Wrong, identified three major assumptions we make to convince ourselves that we are rightIgnorance Assumption We believe that others are uneducated or lack the information that we have. Thats why they are wrong. If we share our knowledge, they will stop being ignorant.Idiocy Assumption Other people have the same information as we do, but they cant put the pieces together. They are not as smart as we are. Thats why they are wrong.Evil Assumption We operate under the premise that others know the truth (and know we are right) but are distorting it. They are wrong on purpose - they want to cause evil.Thats the problem with being right always we assume other people are wrong. They are either ignorant, idiots or just want to cause confusio n or harm. When you play the blaming game, you stop considering the possibility that you might be the one whos wrong. No one wins the being right battleSometimes it is better to lose and do the right thing than to win and do the wrong thing. - Tony BlairBeing always right is a mask we wear its anything but authentic, as I wrote here.Being right is a paradox its built on a wrong assumption that things are objective. Reality is a by-product of our perception. We all watch the same world but observe different things. Thats the magic of being human - we are continually being challenged by others viewpoints. We live in an era of information abundance. Theres enough information to prove any theory right or wrong. Thats how science has been evolving since its beginning. Any new theory proves the former one wrong. Once we adopt a new method as correct, the former one turns into wrong.Right and wrong are fluid concepts they mutate through time and individual perspectives. We are good at manipu lating data and arguments to validate our truth. Thats precisely how our brains are wired. We focus on listening and identifying the information that confirms our beliefs. We dont seek to learn, but to make a point. This mental delusion is called Confirmation Bias - We see what we believe, as I wrote here. The denial journeyIf you are afraid of being lonely, dont try to be right. - Jules RenardSelf-defined wrongologist Kathryn Schulz coined the term Error Blindness. As she explains in this TED Talk We dont have an internal cue to know that we are wrong about something until its too late. The expert also describes a cultural reason. In elementary school, we are taught that failing is associated to dumbs. As we grow up, we reinforce the notion that people that make mistakes are a failure. Thats why we focus our energy into bedrngnis making errors ourselves.Becoming a Zero Mistake part is the delusional mindset behind why we want to be always right. Perfectionism is the worst enemy of ch ange, as I wrote here. This delusional mindset goes through three different phases.Phase 1 We are wrong but dont realize it yetWe assume that we are right. We dont care about double checking facts or challenging our beliefs. We feel confident because we believe we own the truth.Phase 2 We realize that we are wrongEither by doing introspection or because new evidence is presented by others, we come to learn that we are wrong. This makes us feel vulnerable we are not perfect, shall we let others know that we made a mistake?Phase 3 We deny being wrongBeing right or wrong turns into a battle. We feel under scrutiny. We become defensive because we feel under attack. Even if you win the being right battle, deep inside you, you know you are wrong. Its a lose-lose situation. You burned bridges, created friction with others, just to make your point. Thats because you allowed your ego to take over.Eckhart Tolle said Needing to be right is a form of violence. The desire to impose our ideas is any thing but freedom. It can range from being stubborn or inflexible to trying to dominate others by believing that we hold the truth, not others.Believing that one is always right is intellectual bullying. The upside of being wrongDoubt is a skill. Credulity, by contrast, appears to be something very like an instinct. - Kathryn SchulzWe default to being right all the time. Realizing that we can be wrong takes practice. Its an ability that needs to be nurtured. It starts by acknowledging that we are human. If others make mistakes, its unrealistic to believe you wont. Also, things will pass as it happened in the meditation zen story.Being wrong has many benefits. You accept your vulnerability. When you recognize that you are not perfect, you release a lot of pressure. Instead of trying to pretend something you are not, you become more aware of your flaws. Once you understand your weaknesses, you can work on improving your act.You embrace a learning mind. Things change, information evolves , the world is anything but static. Learning is a lifelong experience. Your ability to learn is the fruchtwein important skill you have. To embrace a learning mind, you need to let go of a right or wrong approach. You open new possibilities. To err is to wander. Discovery means finding something unexpected or unknown, not something specific you were looking for. When you stop judging, you start discovering. You prioritize self-growth over your reputation. Your ego is your worst enemy, not being wrong. When you realize that your true-self, not your reputation or image, is what matters, you can tear off your masks. You dont need to prove anything. Thats the most important realization to let go of being always right.Practice being wrongIgnorance is a fine line that separates right and wrong. - Yash ThakurWhat you know imprisons you. Even worse, what you think you know, is what gets you stuck. Thats the dangerous side effect of being right all the time.Rightness is an illusion. Letting go of the attachment to-be-always-right requires self-awareness but, most importantly, to act against your instincts. Are you ready to challenge yourself? And to do things differently even if they feel wrong? The following small experiments will help you practice. Theres no right way to embrace a being wrong mindset. It takes humility and more courage than being right all the time. See what happens.Lose an argument on purpose. Concede defeat. Losing on purpose is liberating. You are more than winning. Experience how it feels being wrong (even if you are 100% convinced that you are not). It hurts, but its a powerful way to exercise empathy and walk in someone elses shoes.Support a decision you disagree with. Let someone else make a decision, especially one makes you feel uncomfortable. However, dont just agree to disagree. But rather agree to experiment. Let go of the power of being a manager, a team leader or a parent. When you delegate authority, you also resign to always being right.A dopt an opposite belief as true. Choose one aspect of life that you hold yourself as the absolute truth. It can be politics, religion, sex, education, whatever you hold strong. Now change your belief to the opposite. And for a week or so, experiment seeing the world, the news, and others through a lens that is the opposite of the one you normally apply. How does it feel? What have you discovered? What were you missing? The purpose is not to change your beliefs but to make sure they are not blinding you either.Prioritize being compassionate over being right. Giving up rightness is not easy. It creates suffering. The same happens to the other person when you want to win an argument at any cost. Realize when minimizing other persons pain is more important than your win. Some items in life are not that critical. Being compassionate matters more than being right. Be open to change your mind. Our beliefs and ideas change through time. Give yourself permission to evolve your thoughts. Dont get stuck into what you thought was right. Changing your mind with a purpose is not betraying who you are its personal growth.Letting go of a right-wrong mentality is not easy. However, being constantly fighting to make your point is strenuous and pointless.Be selective with your battles. Things will pass, but dont miss the opportunity to be kind. your children are not your professional accomplishments

your children are not your professional accomplishments your children are not your professional accomplishments You do not want something like this on your resumeMother of three children William (born 1992), Kara (born 1994), and Lee (born 1997)Why is it there?? Why? Why? Get it off, immediately.I do not need to know the names and ages of your children, your pets, or your parents. I need to know about your skills and accomplishments. In the professional realm, not the domestic one.Obligatory disclaimer that were talking about the U.S. here and, yes, other countries share all kinds of personal info on their resumes, like spouses, children, health status, religion, and bra size. The U.S. does not, and people whose resumes make it clear that theyve spent their entire career in the U.S. have no excuse for this sort of thing.

Bad habits 8 ways to end them and be more productive

Bad habits 8 ways to end them and be more productiveBad habits 8 ways to end them and be more productiveBad habits we all gotem. Youknow what they are. Youknow youshould stop. But. . . its hard. In fact, sometimes you feel downright powerless. And youre notlagelage crazyResearchfrom Duke University shows 40% of what you do every day isnt a decision - its a habit. From Charles Duhiggs excellent book The Power of Habit Why We Do What We Do in Life and BusinessOne paper published by a Duke University researcher in 2006 found that more than 40 percent of the actions people performed each day werent actual decisions, but habits.Yeah, you spend almost half the day on autopilot. And changing schwimmschwimmbadeanstalteanstalt habits isnt just kinda nice. If you want to be a success, studies show habits really do matter.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and morePeople who have career momentum are 53% more likely to have good habits.ViaThe 100 Simple Secrets of Successful PeopleComparing middle management employees, researchers have found that those whose careers continue to have momentum are 53 percent more likely to engage in healthy life habits than those whose careers are stalled. Roberts and Friend 1998If were on autopilot for half the day, we want those routinesto be good ones. So what really works for ditching bad habits? And isnt horribly difficult?Letsget to it. . .1. Change abad habit. SingularAt one time we have all felt as ifour lives are a constellation of bad habits. You get home from work, youre exhausted and you go from one I should not be doing this to the next. Its like you need to change everything. And you need to do it tomorrow No. Bad. Wrong. Does not compute.Do less. Just focus on fixingone thing at a time. When I spoke toPower of Habitauthor Charles Duhigg, he said thatsthe key to lasting change. Heres CharlesIf you try to transform everything at once, it tends to be very, very destabilizing. In general, what people should do, is they should think of change as a project. Its a project that takes a whileNow, it might feel frustrating to say, If you have ten habits you want to change, that means its going to take eight months or nine months. The truth of the matter is if this is a behavior thats really important, changing it will have this huge impact on your life. Its worth spending a month to change one behavior permanently. Youre going to be reaping the benefits of that for the next decade. You dont need to overhaul your life. Just killone bad habit. Give it a month and then move on to the next.(To learn the four rituals neuroscience says will make you happy, click here.)Okay, youre focused on one thing. Whats a painless way to start?2. Dont stop. Just countWhatever it is you shouldnt be doing, you dont have to stop yet. (Doesnt that sound nice?)Dont try to reduce the habit, reduce the variability in the habit. In other words, don t even try to quit smoking try to smoke the exact same number of cigarettes each day. Or only check Facebook your usual 90 times an hour. This tinyeffort toward self-control can lead to a decrease in bad habitsover time, unconsciously.Via The Willpower Instinct How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of ItBehavioral economist Howard Rachlin proposes an interesting trick for overcoming the problem of always starting a change tomorrow. When you want to change a behavior, aim to reduce the variability in your behavior, not the behavior itself. He has shown that smokers asked to try to smoke the same number of cigarettes every day gradually decrease their overall smoking- even when they are explicitly told not to try to smoke less.Just paying attention to those numbers can make a big difference. Merely looking at the calorie counts on food labels before eating welches more effective for weight loss than exerciseLabel users who did not exercise displayed a slightly greater likelihood of weight loss than those who exercised but did not read food labels. Additionally, those who only read labels were more likely to improve their chances of weight loss by adding exercise to their routines rather than abandoning label usage in favor of exercise. You dont have to deny yourself at first. Just notice the numbers and continue to behave badly - but consistently.(To learn what Harvard research says will make you happier and more successful, click here.)Thats not hard. You dont have to change. How else can you beat bad habits without changing yourself at all?3. Dont change you. Change your worldEvery day I download Instagram on my iPhone and every day I delete Instagram off my iPhone. Does it sound like I have a problem? Nope. Its a great way to make sure I only check it once a day.The app isnt there tempting me to check it 600 times. And its a pain to keep downloading it. And this is a big secret to beating bad habits.Dont change yourself. Chan ge your context. We engage in habits because of triggers in our environment. Remove the triggers or make them more difficult to reach and youre less likely to engage in the behavior. When I spoke to behavioral economist Dan Ariely he said context affects your behavior much, much more than you think.Heres DanOne of the big lessons from social science in the last 40 years is that environment matters. If you go to a buffet and the buffet is organized in one way, you will eat one thing. If its organized in a different way, youll eat different things. We think that we make decisions on our own but the environment influences usto a great degree. Because of that we need to think about how tochange ourenvironment. So get the tempting stuff away from you. Bestselling author Shawn Achor recommends the 20 second rule. Make bad habits 20 seconds harder to begin and youre far less likely to engage in them.Heres ShawnWatching too much television? Merely take out the batteries of the remote control creatinga 20 second delay and it dramatically decreases the amount of television people will watch. You dont need to change yourself just yet. Change the things around you.(To learn an FBI behavior experts secrets for getting people to like you, click here.)Pretty simple, right? Good. And lets keep it that way. Do you need to put pressure on yourself and be a demanding taskmaster to eliminate bad habits? Nope. Neuroscience says do the exact opposite4. Chill, dudeWhat makes you more likely to engage in bad habits? Stress.UCLA neuroscientist Alex Korbsays staying relaxed helps your brain make the right choices.Heres AlexI have a friend who always says, Stress takes the prefrontal cortex offline. Stress changes the dynamics of that conversation. It weakens the prefrontal cortex. That part of your brain doesnt have infinite resources. It cant be eternally vigilant and so while its not paying attention, your striatum islike, Lets go eat a cookie. Lets go drink a beer.Anything that you can do to reduce stress can help strengthen the prefrontal cortexs control over your habits.Dont pressure yourself. Stay calm and youll behave better.(To learn how to stop being lazy and get more done, click here.)Alright, the tipsso far have been plenty easy. Time for some black belt methods. And we also need to correct some myths. How do you really eliminate those bad habits? Its easy Dont.5. Dont eliminate bad habits. Replace them.Ironically, studies show saying, Ill never do that again makes you even more likely to do that again.Charles Duhigg wrote the book on habits. And he says the research is clear you cant eliminate bad habits but you can replace them.Want to stop shoving donuts in your mouth? When you feel the urge, put some sugarless gum in your piehole. The trigger stays the same and you still get a nice reward but youre replacing the bad behavior with a good one.FromThe Power of Habit Why We Do What We Do in Life and BusinessWe know that a habit cannot be eradicated- it mu st, instead, be replaced. And we know that habits are most malleable when the Golden Rule of habit change is applied If we keep the same cue and the same reward, a new routine can be inserted.Notice what triggers your bad behavior and then replace your usual response with a new one that gives you a different (but still pleasurable) reward.(To learn a Georgetown professors secrets for managing your time like an expert, click here.)Am I making this all sound too easy? Dont worry - I know youre gonna screw up. We all do. In fact, I bet you know when youre most likely to screw up.So here are the two words that can make sure you dont blow it6. If and thenPlans are good. And with a very simple one you can resist temptation. When do you always perform that bad habit? For instance, Whenever I sit on the couch I surf the internet endlessly.Okay, now use two words to make a teensy weensy little planIf I sit on the couch, then I will pick up a book.FromNine Things Successful People Do Differe ntlyIts called if-then planning, and it is a really powerful way to help you achieve any goal. Well over a hundred studies, on everything from diet and exercise to negotiation and time management, have shown that deciding in advance when and where you will take specific actions to reach your goal (e.g., If it is 4 p.m., then I will return any phone calls I should return today) can double or triple your chances for success.Sound too simple to be true? Wrong.FromNine Things Successful People Do DifferentlyThe results were dramatic weeks later, 91 percent of if-then planners were still exercising regularly, compared to only 39 percent of nonplanners Similar results have been shown for other health-promoting behaviors, like remembering to do monthly breast self-exams (100 percent of planners, 53 percent of nonplanners), and getting cervical cancer screenings (92 percent of planners, 60 percent of nonplanners). Two words. Big changes.(To learnwhat Yale research says is the lazy way to an awesome life, click here.)But what happens if you still blow it? Dont worry, buddy. I got you covered . . .7. Forgive yourselfYoure going to screw up. And thats okay.In Richard Wisemans study of people who achieved their goals he realized we shouldExpect to revert to your old habits from time to time. Treat any failure as a temporary set-back rather than a reason to give up altogether. So you say youre not going to eat cookies. Then you accidentally eat a cookie. Thats not when the diet is blown. The diet is blown when you eat the one cookie and say, I give up - and then devour the rest of the bag. What does science say we should dowhen we lose self-control or procrastinate?Forgive yourself and move on.ViaThe Willpower Instinct How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of ItStudy after study shows that self-criticism is consistently associated with less motivation and worse self-control. It is also one of the single biggest predictors of depression, which drains both I will power and I want power. In contrast, self-compassion- being supportive and kind to yourself, especially in the face of stress and failure- is associated with more motivation and better self-control.In trying to do anything to better your life, its okay to stumble. It takes time. You learn.(To learn how to be more compassionate with yourself, click here.)Okay, weve covered a lot. Lets round it up and learn the eighth tip - which is the easiest and most fun of them allSum upHeres how to get rid of those awful bad habitsOne at a time.Beat one bad habit per month and in a year youll be awesome.Dont stop. Just count. Dont eliminate the bad behavior just yet. First, be consistent in your awfulness.Dont change you. Change your world. 20 second rule. Make it harder to engage in bad habits.Chill, dude. Stress makes the bad stuff tempting. Relax and youll behave better.Dont eliminate. Replace. You cant kill bad habits but you can swap them out for new ones.If and Then. A simple plan for how youll beat temptation helps you beat temptation.Forgive yourself. Beating yourself up makes you behave worse.Self-compassion keeps you going. And whats the final tip?Peer pressure is a good thing - when you use it strategically.Mom wanted you to hang out with the smart kids in school because theyprovided good examples. Mom was right. Its simple, really. Hang out with people who you want to be. Procrastinate a lot? Spend more time with uber-productive friends. Want to get in shape? Hang around those healthy-eating gym addicts. When I spoke to Carlin Flora, author ofFriendfluence The Surprising Ways Friends Make Us Who We Are, she saidResearch shows over time, you develop the eating habits, health habits and even career aspirations of those around you. If youre in a group of people who have really high goals for themselves youll take on that same sense of seriousness. And conversely, if youre in a group of friends who are not that ambitious, then you too will lower your standards.Okay, enough talk. CV vs Resume Whats the Difference Between a Resume and Curriculum Vitae

CV vs Resume Whats the Difference Between a Resume and Curriculum VitaeCV vs Resume Whats the Difference Between a Resume and Curriculum VitaeA resume is a living document that should be customized for every job. A curriculum vitae (CV) is a comprehensive document you may not change for months or years. There are other differences Length, update frequency, format, and focus. What is a Resume?Resumes are short documents, usually only one or two pages total, that concisely list professional experience, accomplishments, and education. A resume typically focuses on work experience. Most common in the U.S. and Canada, resumes should be updated for each and every job an applicant applies for. Since zugnglich job applications are submitted through applicant tracking systems, resume keywords , job titles, and accomplishments need to be tailored in order for an applicant to be competitive. Furthermore, while certain positions in your work history may be relevant to one job, they might not be re levant to another. Resumes are constantly in a state of change. There are three ways to format a resume chronological, functional and hybrid. While a chronological resume format is most common, job seekers have the option to choose the resume format that best represents their unique professional experience. There are a lot of dos and donts when it comes to writing a modern resume. For example, while including references is a major dont for resumes, references are a big do for CVs.What is a CV?Where a resume focuses on relevant work experience, a CV offers more comprehensive professional coverage in addition to broader life experience. What does CV stand for?CV stands for curriculum vitae, which means Course of Life in Latin. That translation actually describes a CV very well considering it isa complete listing of your professional, academic, and related histories. What goes on a CV?A CV is much longer than a resume. CVs are usually at least two or three pages long but can reach up to 15 pages in some cases (e.g. seasoned academics). It often includes in great detailAchievementsEducationTeaching positionsWork experiencePublicationsAwardsResearchDegreesPresentationsGrantsHonorsScholarly and professional affiliationsA CV is always formatted chronologically and unlike a resume, does not change from job-to-job. In fact, CVs remain static and are only updated when the applicant completes a new accomplishment. For example, if the applicant has a new research study published in a reputable journal, they would add the mention to their CV.When to use a Resume or CVJob descriptions will typically specify whether to submit a resume or CV. If not, there are a few factors that can help determine whether you need a resume of curriculum vitae.RegionThe use of resumes and CVs is primarily regional. Resumes are most commonly used in the U.S. and Canada (though there are exceptions, highlighted below). CVs are typically used internationally, particularly in the UK, Ireland, New Zeal and, and across Europe.Type of JobEven in the U.S. and Canada, there are certain professions that do require a CV in place of a resume. For example, a CV is usually used in academia by PhD candidates, university teaching applicants, and in some post-graduate application scenarios. The main use of a CV in academia is to include publication information. CVs are also common in clinical medical professions. In those cases, research and education are highlighted. On the flipside, a resume will rarely be required in regions where CVs are preferred. However, if you live in the UK or Europe and are applying for a job in the U.S. or Canada, you will likely need a resume.Because a resume and a curriculum vitae serve different purposes, job candidates should consider having drafts of both written and ready to use. A CV can serve as a master resume or career management document. Both resumes and CVs perform better when including tailored keywords. While CVs have unlimited space to include many ke ywords, resumes require a bit more finesse to fit the right keywords in a small amount of space.Test your resume or CV against the job description with Jobscanto see all the keywords youre missing. Retired Salesman Returns to the Job-Search Fray

Retired Salesman Returns to the Job-Search FrayRetired Salesman Returns to the Job-Search FrayWith a declining retirement fund, Chuck Jordan took his 28 years of experience and re-entered Californias sales market.Chuck Jordan, 56, welches retired and looked forward to living the good life after 28 years as a federal sales rep for a communications company kusined in California. But as the economy slowed and his 401(k) shrank, Jordan, who lives near Sacramento, began to get nervous. After a five-month sabbatical an opportunity for a high-level sales position at Northrop-Grumman opened up, and Jordan went back to the workforce. After only a year, however, he says he welches back to Square One, as the entire division for which he worked closed. More than 700 people gelbkreuzgas their jobs that day, Jordan recalled, including him.I liked what I was doing, and it was such a shock to think, Oh, well, Im back in the job market again, Jordan said. I didnt want to make a career change and there wasnt ever a question of whether or not I wanted to get back into the job market. I had to do it because of my inability to continue to live comfortably on my retirement funds.Making the pitchJordans first instinct, as with many job seekers, was to blanket the known universe with resumes and cover letters and hope that sheer quantity would sway the odds in his favor. If you looked through my e-mail, there are probably over a hundred different versions of my resume and cover letter that I modified slightly to align with various requirements of jobs I applied for, he said.Jordan signed up for all the different job-search sites, scanned local newspapers and magazines and networked furiously in attempts to land a position. One incident, however, offered him an astounding perspective and permanently changed the way he went about his job search.Id applied for a job I found in the paper with a solar-energy products-manufacturing company, and I realized one day when I was out that I was rig ht around the corner from the address. I decided to stop by, he said. It wasnt a field in which he was interested or experienced, but it was a job, Jordan said. What he found was a nearly empty office space and a lone receptionist. He explained his situation and asked if he could get some additional information about the job, the benefits and salary. The receptionist informed him that the company had received more than 300 applications for the position, and that only $35,000 had been budgeted for the position. That was really sobering to me, Jordan said. A job that wasnt that great, with lousy pay, and they had over 300 applications. But that experience was a blessing in disguise, he added. He realized that it made more sense to rein in his search and hone in on specific markets and companies with which he knew his skills and experience aligned.Youd think that it would make more sense to apply for anything at all you could possibly do, but in reality, if you dont differentiate yourself in some way, one of those other people will get a job and you wont, Jordan said.Deal or no deal?As a sales representative with a career focused on the government market, Jordan says hed been under pressure most of his working life to move to the East Coast. But he was adamant that he could do what he loved and stay where he was.For more than a year, Jordan was employed at a number of companies in California. His first position was with a company that did work for the State of California itself, where he was assured hed be the only salesperson working with the state. When he started work, he realized theyd left out some crucial information. It was a big culture shock, said Jordan, whod worked much of his career in business casual environments or from a virtual home office. And, he said, he discovered that far from being the head salesperson at the firm, hed been hired to handle overflow work from an existing employee. Needless to say, it wasnt a fit.I thought, OK, I work in a cube, I have to wear a tie, and Im a second-hand salesperson I realized shortly that it just wasnt gratifying, he said. After moving to another position, he encountered similar issues. My next company hired me and rehired an employee whod left the company some time earlier. He took over existing accounts in preferable sales territories, and I was given new accounts whod never worked with the company before, Jordan said.To make matters worse, the company appeared on a federal non-approved vendor list because it had entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection a few years earlier, so most of Jordans efforts were futile.I had new territory with skeptical, hard-to-sell customers that werent allowed to buy from me, he said.Closing the saleAfter 13 months, Jordan signed up for SalesLadder. Out of all the job-search engines he used, he said, Ladders was the most effective, since it allowed him to fine-tune his search and weeded out positions and companies that didnt fit his criteria. It did a lot of th e qualifying and handled the elimination process for me, he said. What was taking me ten hours a day was made so much simpler. His refusal to give up or to give in paid off, when Jordan landed a position as senior account manager/consultant with Valencia, Calif.-based Nexus IS, which works on many federal government contracts. After only four days on the job, Jordan said hes happy about the choices he made and feels hell be content and successful in his new role. While his base salary isnt as high as it was in previous jobs, Jordans not complaining. He said he understand that base pay rates have declined because of the economy, and adds that he has no salary cap in his new position, so his total earnings are up to him.Jordan said the key to surviving and thriving was tenacity and a positive attitude, and he hopes other job seekers like himself will take his advice to heart.Once you realize that complaining and moaning arent going to help, you just have to stick with it and never give up, Jordan said. Once you get past that, fighting depression and suppressing the urge to just give up is the hardest part.

The Ascent of the Hot Air Balloon

The Ascent of the Hot Air Balloon The Ascent of the Hot Air Balloon When we think of humankinds first forays into flight, two brothers come to mind, named Orville and Wilbur. However, it may be more appropriate to think of two other siblings from back in the 1700s Jacques-tienne Montgolfier and Joseph-Michel Montgolfier and their invention of 1783, the hot air balloon. The purpose of the fabrics is to contain the air, says Andy Richardson, owner of hot air balloon manufacturer National Ballooning LTD in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The balloon has a load building structure and the webbing works almost like an exoskeleton. When youre designing balloons you take into account stressing of the fabric, the cables the balloon runs to, and the basket. The first balloon welches made mostly out of silk and paper, he says, and was hand-stitched together, using smoke and wood fires to provide the heat but only the heat on the ground was used and the ride was very short.Model of the Montgolfier brothe rs balloon in the London Science Museum. Image Wikimedia CommonsPopularity SoarsDespite success centuries ago, it was only as recently as the 1960s that the hot air balloon truly became popular. The U.S. government hired Ed Yost to see if he could create balloons for getting troops over the Iron Curtain. But the balloons could only be so quiet. But while it may not have worked for military purposes, Yost didnt lose the balloon itch. He helped form Raven Industries to make it a leiaya sport and the hot air balloon is now known for that as well as being a leading source of marketing. So how are the balloons created today? It used to be fire on the ground to get it going but that was replaced by propane, Richardson says. The burners are loosely modeled on the thrusters from the space shuttle. The burners have coils and when you hit the blast on the burner, he says, it allows the propane to go out of the tank, through the hose, and into the burner. The propane goes to the top and runs dow n the bottom of the burner where the jets are. It superheats the propane and gives you three times the amount of power if you just took raw propane and set it on fire, he adds. One helpful addition was the parachute valve added in the mid-1970s, which allows air to escape through the parachute for an easier landing. It just pulls the parachute down from the webbing on the balloon, he says. Before that it had a looped velcro panel at the side of the balloon, but the whole balloon deflated. But now the air pushes it closed so it resets itself. The panels for the balloon are designed by CAD programs, doing stress analysis to make sure the fabric isnt overstressed. Each gore of panels on the balloon has anywhere from 8-17 trapezoidal panels. Most companies are using AutoCAD or Rhino 3D computer programs for designing, he adds.Interestingly enough, one area thats still the same is the basket. It was rattan then and rattan now, he says. They tried using fiberglass, aluminum composite materi als, but they had it right the first time.A typical hot air balloon ride is one hour starting at either the first few hours at sunrise or the last few before sunset, and can range in height from treetop level to 3,000-5,000 feet. While a balloon goes relatively slowly, its possible for wind speed to take it to 120 mph. Even then it can seem like youre not even moving, he says.Richardson says the FAA wants a future designer to intern with a certified balloons instructor for 18 months to learn the entire process from start to finish before pursuing balloon building, a craft centuries in the making.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.
